U.S. Religious Knowledge Survey
Recommended Reading recently conducted a survey of Americans from all religious backgrounds, to test the level of knowledge people have about the major religious beliefs in our culture.
The results were interesting. Atheists and agnostics, Jews and Mormons are among the highest-scoring groups on a new survey of religious knowledge, outperforming evangelical Protestants, mainline Protestants and Catholics on questions about the core teachings, history and leading figures of major world religions.
On average, Americans correctly answer 16 of the 32 religious knowledge questions on the survey. Here is the breakdown.
I think it is important for all people in this diverse culture in which we live to at least have a basic understanding of the beliefs of those around us. I cannot tell you how often I’ve encountered people who are critical of the Faiths of others, and yet when put to the test they know little to nothing about the Beliefs that they are so adamantly opposing.
So, where do you stack up? How much do you know about your neighbor’s belief system…. or your own? Find out by taking the condensed version of the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life survey. It may surprise you. (Incidentally, I got 2 wrong. What’s that I hear? Is that my own horn? Toot toot! By golly it is! 😉 )
