Signal the Storm: Christian Art Collective
“A Christian should use these arts to the glory of God, not just as tracts, mind you, but as things of beauty to the praise of God. An art work can be a doxology in itself.” ― Francis A. Schaeffer,
Centuries ago, Christians represented nearly the entirety of the artistic community. Almost all artistic expression had a spiritual component, and rather than being veiled or self-consciously hidden, it was overt. Christian artists were celebrated for their inspirational creations and this stretched beyond the world of paint and canvass. Literature, poetry, and music also were the domain of the unashamedly Christian artist, and there was no stigma or fear.
Something has happened to the arts and Christianity. Suddenly there is an almost puritanical fear of artistic expression amongst Christians. Perhaps it is because with the increasing secularization of all art forms, the faithful have found themselves associating art with subversion and perversion and rebellion.
I maintain that this is an unwarranted and even dangerous view of creative pursuit and expression. We are made in the image of a creative God, and one of the sweetest ways to honor and worship Him is through creation of works that glorify Him.
“It is true that all men are created in the image of God, but Christians are supposed to be conscious of that fact, and being conscious of it should recognize the importance of living artistically, aesthetically, and creatively, as creative creatures of the Creator. If we have been created in the image of an Artist, then we should look for expressions of artistry, and be sensitive to beauty, responsive to what has been created for us.” – Edith Schaeffer, The Hidden Art of Homemaking
In a culture replete with entertainment and art that celebrates the world and worldliness, it is refreshing to know that there are corners of Christian culture seeking to use artistic expression as a form of worship and praise. One such manifestation of this movement toward the embrace of art-as-praise is a brand new collective known as “Signal the Storm.”
Early in its inception, “Signal the Storm” exists as a welcoming environment for those who are part of the arts community to express their love of Jesus and the Bible using their preferred art forms and unique talents. From the site:
