Lighting Strikes St. Peter’s Basilica After Pope’s Resignation
Coincidence or a sign?
Several hours after Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation, the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City was struck by lightning. The amazing photo was captured by photographer Filippo Monteforte of Agence France-Presse. The photo was quickly tweeted with the caption “#PHOTO: Lightning strikes St Peter’s dome at #Vatican on day the #Pope announced resignation, by Filippo Monteforte pic.twitter.com/FehVjFYP”
It is important to note that Catholics believe in what is called “Apostolic succession”, meaning that it is their contention that every “Bishop of Rome” has been elected in a strict succession or lineage from the apostle Peter, who they believe was the very first Pope. It is then all the more startling that St. Peter’s Basillica was the site of the lightning strike. Many hold that Saint Peter’s tomb is directly below the altar of the basilica.
