H1N1 Swine Flu: The Theories
This post is the result of our investigation into the variety of theories that surround the current Swine Flu (now officially known as 2009 H1N1) pandemic threat. We do not endorse or dismiss the theories that are going to be presented. This is merely a cross-section of what is being reported and speculated in a variety of venues.
Where possible, we will provide a link to the forum where the theory is being discussed. Keep in mind that many of the following possibilities presented are based on widespread forum chatter, and will require further investigation on the part of the reader to determine the validity of the claim.
First, the most recent numbers from the http://www.cvk.se/: 1 May 2009 — The situation continues to evolve rapidly. As of 06:00 GMT, 1 May 2009, 11 countries have officially reported 331 cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection. The United States Government has reported 109 laboratory confirmed human cases, including one death. Mexico has reported 156 confirmed human cases of infection, including nine deaths. The following countries have reported laboratory confirmed cases with no deaths – Austria (1), Canada (34), Germany (3), Israel (2), Netherlands (1), New Zealand (3), Spain (13), Switzerland (1) and the United Kingdom (8).
Theory #1: Follow the Money.
In this troubled world economy, most everyone is trying to find new and innovative ways to increase income. This theory surmises that the Swine Flu threat is a concoction of either media outlets or pharmaceutical companies, or both.
It has not been lost on those who follow politics that former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, as well as former Vice President Dick Cheney are both major stock holders in Tamiflu, one of the only vaccines touted to be effective against H1N1. Shares for Rumsfeld total in the ballpark of $18 million. This has caused concern for some. These same trepidations arose during the Avian Flu scare a few years ago.
While the market in general is taking a hit from the current influenza scare, certain groups are seeing an increase in revenue. According to public radio “Marketplace” out of London:
Shares in Switzerland’s leading drug maker, Roche, are up nearly 4 percent this morning. The company says it’s scaling up production of Tamiflu. The drug’s been shown to be an effective vaccine against the virus. In the U.K., GlaxoSmithKline, which manufacturers its own vaccine against deadly flu viruses, is also gaining in the markets. Glaxo’s drug is called Relenza.
In a world growing weary of economic news and still suffering from U.S. Election hangover, the media in general is of course seeing a rise in viewers, as people scramble to find the latest information regarding this outbreak.
Some advocates of the “financial gain” theory claim that journalists who had access to laboratories released the virus to create a story. Although I try to remain neutral here, this seems highly unlikely. Others claim that it would be a cake walk for Big Pharma to release a virus into the populous.
Theory #2: Flu Threat Overblown by Conservatives to Attack Illegal Immigrants.
Many of the most outspoken voices in the Conservative wing of the media do seem to be blaming people illegally crossing the border from Mexico to the U.S. for the outbreak of H1N1. Here is a clip of a variety of commentators on the issue of illegal immigrants and Swine Flu.
Theory #3: Liberals Overblowing the Threat to usher in Universal Healthcare
With the numbers of infected rising daily in the U.S., many media figures as well as Political officials are taking the opportunity to revisit the concept of Universal Healthcare. This has caused some to theorize that there is a conspiracy amongst the media and the government to create fear in the public so that they would become more receptive to Universal Healthcare. An example of one site’s claim can be found here: Is the mass media using the “swine flu” to scare the public into Universal Healthcare solutions?
Theory #4: Swine Flu is a Lab created bio-weapon.
This theory is tricky, because it actually encompasses a variety of sub theories. Basically, the sub theories go like this…
a. Terrorists did it… b. U.S. Gov’t did it… c. United Nations (or New World Order) did it…
Some are claiming that the fact that only Mexicans have died from the Swine Flu so far is an indication that a race targeted bio weapon is currently being tested, in the form of H1N1. An example of this theory can be seen here on the Drudge Report: Is Swine Flu a Race-Specific Virus?
Others blame Terrorist groups like Al Qaeda or the Taliban. One writer says the following:
My specialty in the U.S. Air Force was Nuclear, Biological and Chemical warfare (weapon) defense. Our enemies can take and engineer diseases and release them in unsuspecting populated areas to wreak death and destruction….
…..Suddenly, the H1N1 swine flu appears in both Mexico City and New York City (two of the most populated cities in the world), far from swine. This virus strain is reportedly unlike any other disease, and contains strains of human flu, bird/avian flu, and swine flu. It’s apparently spreading from human to human (the bird flu never achieved that, only from birds to human). (see full article…)
Theory #5: Government Using Flu Threat to Force Vaccinations for a Variety of Nefarious Reasons.
Theory #6: Government Using Flu Threat to Usher in Martial Law.
Theory #7: Government Intentionally Released Swine Flu as a test to see how Pandemic Threat can be beneficial.
Theory #8: All of the Above.
Fox News Discusses Possibility of Martial Law
Leading the charge on the above mentioned theories is Alex Jones of Infowars.com and PrisonPlanet.com. Jones has hosted a few emergency broadcasts of his syndicated radio show outlining how these theories work together, and how the U.S. and World Governments have invented this threat to achieve long held goals of population control through vaccination, Martial Law or a Police State, and that it is all one big hoax on the citizens of the World. Visit either of the two web sites to see a host of articles that outline these claims. Infowars.com PrisonPlanet.com
Below you can hear the entire emergency broadcast from Alex Jones from April 30, where he lays out in detail his thoughts on the H1N1 Swine Flu threat.
How bad the Swine Flu situation will get remains to be seen. The origins of 2009 H1N1 may never be known. While situations of crisis always fuel speculation, it is important to remember that no one really knows the truth. It may be that one or more of the above theories contains some truth. It may also be that none of them are accurate, and that this is simply a case of a long overdue cycle of infectious disease that has attacked mankind since the dawn of time. It may also be that this outbreak will go away as quickly as it came. Then again, there’s always this possibility…..
Our advice is to take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones, and don’t allow fear to control your life. Here are a list of the things that you can do right now to protect yourself:
1. Wash you Hands! Experts agree that this is your first and most effective line of defense.
2. Avoid contact with people who appear to be sick, even if it is just a scratchy throat or a sniffle.
3. Avoid hospitals if you can. Only go to hospital in the case of an emergency.
4. Avoid unnecessary travel to Mexico. Obviously.
5. Increase your intake of vitamin C. This is an under reported but some say highly effective defense against Influenza. While too much Vitamin C can cause its own health risks, there may be some benefit from an increase in your daily dosage. According to natural health consultant Jonathan Campbell, The best way to prepare for influenza is by enhancing your immune system and increasing the amount of vitamin C in your body.
6. Have an Emergency Food and Water Supply. This is not advised to create panic. In the event of any kind of potential threat, from a bad storm to a viral pandemic, it is wise to have a couple of days supply of food and water on hand, just in case travel is not advised for a short time. Stock up on some bottled water and some extra cans of soup. It won’t hurt to have this on hand, and you just may be grateful that you did.
