Extraordinary Music for Meditation, Relaxation, Investigation, Inspiration
It seems that a common bond amongst those of us who revel in unknown realms, esoteric intrigue, paranormal phenomena, conspiratorial theorizing, and occultist oddity… is that our musical tastes tend to lean a little to the ambient/dark side.
For fun and a little change of pace, I decided to compile a list of some of my favorite music to listen to as I research, write, and experience the unexplained. There is a nice mix here of purely atmospheric, to darkly melodic, to just downright fun. They are in no particular order.
***Helpful tip from a helpful lady: Bookmark this post to have all of these fantastic selections on hand for future listening.
The Alien Song (For those who Listen) ~ Milla
In 1994, Milla Jovovich (actress: The 5th Element, Resident Evil) released an album called “The Divine Comedy”. It mostly went under the radar, but as a high school student I was drawn in by the pretty cover art. It quickly became one of my favorites. Particularly her lovely tune The Alien Song.
Help you, we cannot trust you
We cannot understand
Your people’s proud destruction
Of their own land
Oh… we’re flying on from you
We… will not stay to see your fate
Watch them fly away
Watch them fly away
See the lines across the sky
Watch them fly… away
When You’re Evil ~ Voltaire
From his album, “The Devil’s Bris”, Voltaire brings one of the most diabolically fun and catchy tunes about being bad to the bone. My buddy Angie is a big fan of Voltaire, and this one ranks among my tops when I’m feeling a little devilish. Its decadent and delish! Enjoy!
I’m the fear that keeps you awake
I’m the shadows on the wall
I’m the monsters they become
I’m the nightmare in your skull
I’m a dagger in your back
An extra turn upon the rack
I’m the quivering of your heart
A stabbing pain, a sudden start.
And it’s so easy when you’re evil
This is the life, you see
The Devil tips his hat to me
I do it all because I’m evil
And I do it all for free
Your tears are all the pay I’ll ever need..
Boom Boom Ba ~Métisse
Anyone who is familiar with the brilliant TV show “Dead Like Me” will recognize this song. It is infectious and I personally can’t help but become caught up in the sound.
The Oh of Pleasure ~ Ray Lynch
This is just a blissful journey through the vastness of the Universe. It is a trip through some other dimension. It is an astounding and stirring combination of sounds that leaves me enchanted. Perfect for self reflection, soul searching, meditation, or just…. being.
Secret Message~ Rasputina
Rasputina is one of my favorite groups ever in the history of music. They are unique and haunting, with the ever present Cello singing…. sometimes softly, and sometimes loud and electric. The song Secret Message is only one of the many Rasputina songs I love. I would also recommend checking out Rats, Gingerbread Coffin, Thimble Island, Sister Sleep, Hunter’s Kiss, Dig Ophelia, Momma Was an Opium Smoker, Saline the Salt Lake Queen… Hell, just Google Rasputina and listen to anything. They’re magnificent.
I carry a secret message
That I must give to you
It concerns suspicious blessings, now
I’m sure you’ll know what to do
But if it should be some bad news
You know you can lean on me
It might explain Nostradamus
Or my addiction to prophecy
Personal Energy / Voices From Within / Spheres ~ Pestilence
My good buddy Allen turned me on to this gem. It is not something I would normally seek out, but at his suggestion I listened, and I was hypnotized. It is haunting and surreal… Cosmic and inspiring. A combination of death metal vocals with synth guitar and jazzy undertones… not for every mood, but it certainly appealed to me.
Stay ~ Shakespeare’s Sister
One of the best things to come out of the 1990’s, along with one of the coolest videos… this song is just right for nearly any mood. I love love love it. It is at once enchanting and funky. And wow… that video. I still love to watch it.
Yeha-Noha (Wishes of Happiness & Prosperity)~ Sacred Sprit
Nearly every time I listen to this amazing song… I tear up. There is something about the sound, the words, the tone. It is so beautiful and spiritual and inspiring. It gets a lot of play here at the Extraordinary writing desk. And in my Extraordinary car… everywhere. It is a song of balance.
If you’re like me, this song will conjure up the beautiful images of the ocean from the film The Beach. In fact, I think that this mesmerizing piece is one of the main things I took away from that movie. I love this. It quiets my mind and makes me dance in my chair at the same time.
Life in A Northern Town~ Dream Academy
Kiss my Extraordinary butt if you feel compelled to make fun of me for this one. This is a fantastic song! And you know you like it. Don’t lie.
Ok for the rest it’s just titles and videos. Not because I like them any less, but because this is turning into a monstrous post! Enjoy!!
