Celebrities and their Strange Affiliations

It is no secret that Celebrities can generally be found chasing after the latest fad.  Never satisfied with the mundane, most famous people like to affiliate themselves with groups that they consider to be elite.  Out of this desire to be separate from the unwashed masses,  members the glitterati have joined a multitude of secret societies, mysterious religious sects and occult orders.  Here we’ll examine a few.

Sammy Davis Jr. was one of those people obviously looking to set himself apart.  While he was beloved by many as a member of the famous Rat Pack alongside the likes of Frank Sinatra, Sammy had a sinister side.

Sammy Davis Jr. was born a Christian, and converted to Judaism later in life.  Far from devout, Davis dabbled in nearly every debauchery Hollywood had to offer.   His path lead him from one vice to the next, and eventually to the doorstep of the Church of Satan.

The story goes that Davis was invited to a party hosted by the COS.  As he witnessed the bizarre ceremonial nature of the party,  he found himself fascinated.  Davis was eventually invited to become a full member of the notorious Church of Satan.

Davis reveled in his new found status as Satanist.  He proudly wore the Baphomet necklace given to him by Anton LaVey and painted his fingernail red, which was understood as a sign of membership in the COS.   He made special arrangements for LaVey and his cohorts at concerts, and readily gave the devil horn salute from the stage.

Although Davis enjoyed the debauchery and notoriety that came along with his COS membership, something clearly changed.

In his memoir Why Me? he says that “one morning after a ‘coven’ that wasn’t all fun and games… I got some nail polish remover and I took off the red fingernail.”

One can only speculate as to what happened during that coven to make Davis walk away from the COS,  but he didn’t walk away from esoteric orders altogether.  He later became a member of the Knights of Malta,  which is a high degree of the York Rite, a branch of Freemasonry.  In fact, one must be a Master Mason to even gain entrance into the York Rite.

Learn More HereThe Kabbalah Krew: By now you’ve surely heard of the “religion” that has swept through Hollywood, Kabbalah.  Popularized by the material girl herself, Madonna, this Jewish mystic religion has about as much in common with traditional Judaism as Scientology has with Christianity.

Founded in 1965 by Philip Berg and Rav Yehuda Tzvi Brandwein, Kabbalah is a confused mix of New Age philosophy that draws inspiration from Gnosticism, ancient Jewish mysticism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Astrology and Madam Blavotsky’s theosophy.

Kabbalah claims to favor no particular religion, instead referring to itself as a supplement to all religions.  It also boldly claims to be the inspiration for scientific breakthroughs such as The Big Bang, String Theory, atomic structure, and Newton’s Third Law.

The center of Kabbalistic teachings is that of The Light.  The Light, they say, is more important to focus upon than God, for God is bigger than any of us can imagine, and The Light is actually far more responsible for our well being.  In fact, The Light created man to be a receptacle for The Light, thus rather than attributing creation to God, Kabbalah teaches that we were created by The Light for The Light.  Alice Baily’s Lucis Trust comes to mind (more on that in another post, but Google it if you can’t wait).

The truth of Kabbalah is that it is an opportunistic entity that preys upon celebrities searching for meaning in their otherwise lavish but empty lives.  It has cropped up in Hollywood at a time when celebrities are searching for ways to enhance their personal lives while putting on a great show as enlightened beings for the paparazzi.

Kabbalah makes sure to give celebs a means to publicly announce their affiliations without having to stoop to tacky displays of faith.  The red string worn on the left wrist has become a universal indicator of Kabbalah membership.  Meant to act as a talisman to ward of the “evil eye”, its more obvious function is to proclaim the celebs trendy affiliation with the order.

I had assumed that perhaps Kabbalah has been losing its appeal, due to the lack of discussion about the movement in the media, but it appears it continues to spread.  Now even desperate Beverly Hills housewives are getting in on the act.  In a recent episode of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Kyle Richards (aunt of Paris Hilton) was seen sitting on a plane gripping the Zohar (holy book of Kabbalah).

The fact is that while it is clearly fashionable for the glitterati to proclaim their affiliation with Kabbalah, the sect is actually a cult that profits off of the large donations from famous members, and keeps a very different public face than what the average member encounters behind the scenes.  Like its Hollywood cousin Scientology, Kabbalah treats its regular members much differently than its celebrity counterparts.

Allegations from all over the world have arisen of mistreatment and brain washing of members by Kabbalist leaders.  Just Google “Kabbalah Cult” and find endless stories of lives destroyed by the secretive teachings of the group.  In one case, “Kabbalah Water” was being touted as a cure for cancer, and the bottled beverage was being peddled to hospital patients for hundreds of dollars each.

Famous Freemasons:  We’ve speculated at length on Extraordinary Intelligence about the Masonic ties of many individuals in the movie business and music industry.  A variety of artists seem to be fascinated by Masonic imagery, while never proclaiming membership publicly.

The Hollywood establishment has had a long history of connection with Freemasonry.  The Shrine Auditorium, most notably the home to the Academy Awards until they moved to the Kodak Theater, is just as it sounds.  When it isn’t hosting some fabulous celebrity event, the Shrine Auditorium is home to the Al Malaikah Temple, a division of the Shriners.

Many members of Hollywood’s establishment have been known Freemasons.  Douglas Fairbanks, W.C. Fields, Cecil B. DeMille, D.W. Griffith, John Wayne, Roy Rogers and Gene Autry were unashamed of their Masonic membership.  So tight is the connection between Freemasonry and the Hollywood lifestyle that it has been confirmed that there is an underground tunnel that connects Grauman’s Chinese Theater (home to most big Hollywood premiers) to the Hollywood Masonic Temple.  The tunnel was confirmed by staffers of the Jimmy Kimmel show, which is filmed inside the Masonic Temple.

The Freemasonic link to enlightenment and Illuminati inner circle status is surely alluring to those in the world of entertainment, as their very business is to become as elite as possible.  One of the most obvious celebrities who celebrates Masonic symbology is hip hop artist Jay-z.

All one needs to do is look at the symbolism in his clothing line, “Rocawear”.

Whether Jay-z himself is a Freemason is unknown, but the man clearly has a fascination with the secretive group.

Recently, while perusing a magazine at the doctor’s office, I noticed a picture of the man everyone loves to hate, Simon Cowell of American Idol and X-Factor.  In the photo, he was jet skiing around some beautiful location, and the whole thing was rather benign, until I took a closer look at his jet ski.

In the next installment of this series, we’ll explore in deeper detail groups such as Scientology, 3Ho (“Healthy, Happy, Holy Organization”), Theosophy and more.
