Marines Pose for Photo With Nazi Flag

The United States Marine Corps is apologizing for the disturbing photo that has surfaced featuring ten Marines in Afghanistan posing for a posing with a Nazi Schutzstaffel (SS) flag.

The image has created a stir, causing many to question what could have prompted such a photo op.  A military spokesperson said the whole thing was a misunderstanding, according to the associated press:

Master Gunnery Sgt. Mark Oliva, a spokesman at Camp Pendleton, California, said the photo was brought to the attention of the 1 Marine Expeditionary Force inspector general in November, and he found there was no intent on the part of the Marines to identify themselves with a racist organization.

Oliva said the investigation found that the SS symbol was meant to identify the Marines as scout snipers, not Nazis, but it was nonetheless not acceptable.

My instinct is to assume there is more than an innocent foul up to blame.  If the average American can look at the SS symbol and relate it to the Nazi, then surely those who wear the uniform of the U.S. Military know what the flag represents.   At minimum,  this indicates a tremendous lack of sensitivity.  The SS  “lighting bolt” will forever be linked to death squads, gas chambers, and mass murder.    It would be all the more alarming if the use of the SS symbol is sanctioned by the Marine Corps.

This appears not to be an isolated incident.  Reporters have uncovered a cached image (now removed) from Knight’s Armament Company.  As first pointed out by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, the photo shows a military member carrying a rifle emblazoned with the Nazi SS symbol.  MRFF are demanding that the Marine Corps Leadership Immediately Investigate Usage of Nazi SS Flag by Marines in Afghanistan.

From their statement:

The implication of these photographs, if true, should be readily apparent. If the use of the Nazi insignia has been, in any way, condoned or tolerated by the Marine Corp., the implications are abhorrent to everything for which our country is fighting and the constitutional principles for which it stands.

about the kindest thing I can think to say is that most of these boys look to have been born around 1990; the Second World War is becoming ancient history to them. Nazi regalia may be no more emotionally charged to them than a Crusader sword would be to us older types.

Perhaps a little history lesson and a tour of Auschwitz is the right punishment for these fellas.

    3. Maybe they’re psychologically preparing themselves for when they’re brought back to the states and ordered to arrest (or kill) civilians who denounce the Administration or even less…

    4. I love the “US Boys can do no wrong” attitude so prevalent these days. It fits perfect. They knew exactly what it meant, and do things in the Middle East akin to what the SS did. They like it, they meant it, they had it stamped on their guns, let’s be honest about it.

Anyone here ever see the Swastika Building on Coronado Naval Base? Google that up.

How about Operation Paper Clip? Donald Rumsfeld’s Dad was a full-blown Nazi, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Dad was a full-blown Nazi, Karl Rove’s Dad was a full-blown Nazi, Prescott Bush was a full-blown Nazi. Who says that we won WWII? The Nazi party never signed anything, only the German Military ‘surrendered’.

Frames of mind and ways of being aren’t relegated to geography . . . .
