New evidence for a link between genius and autism.

Patricia Howlin of King’s College, London, published a paper last week that reinforces the notion that there is a distinct link between the notion that people who are autistic and people who are labeled as geniuses share many of the same characteristics.  For example, many people with autism have savant qualities with regard to things like mathematics or music.  Conversely, many people with abnormally high intellect display poor communication skills and an obsession with detail.

This fascinating article lays out the ways that the two types of people are similar biologically and neurologically, and explores how this could benefit future research into autism.  Learning more about the autistic brain could lead to breakthroughs in our understanding and possible treatment of those with the diagnosis.  Take a look at the full piece in The Economist.  Genius locus.

The ‘Man-Bat’ makes me think of an X-files episode, the tree thing makes me paranoid for allergy season, and when I first heard about the real life Snakes on a Plane, I first laughed, then was very glad I was not on that plane. Haha Just wanted to say I still love these! Keep up the great work! :)

    Thanks Meggie!

That tree in the lung story made me crazy paranoid. It’s like the kind of thing that they tell you could never happen…and then we find out, Oh yes it can!

I can’t say I’m at all surprised about the genius / autism link. Most people with Asperger’s – which is claissified as a form of autism – are truly gifted in many areas including mathematics etc. I would really recommend reading a book called Born on a Blue Day by Daniel Tammet. He is a relatively high functioning autistic savant and reading about his growing up autistic is heartbreaking but he has these amazing abilities. Numbers have shapes, emotions are seen as colours and he can tell you what any day of the week was if you give him the date and he learns very difficult languages at an alarming speed. It’s great reading it from the Asperger’s sufferer’s perspective.
