Coming Soon to theaters: Sam Raimi’s “Drag Me to Hell”

Being a fan of old school horror films, I’ve noticed a regular decline in the quality of scares on the big screen in the last few decades.  It seems that no matter how hard they try, filmmakers can’t quite get that good old fashioned formula to re-emerge from horror’s glory days.

Today, as I wandered about the Internet, I came across a trailer for a new film by Sam Raimi titled, Drag Me to Hell.  Raimi is the man responsible for the Evil Dead films and countless other classics of cinema.

According to IMDb.com:

A loan officer ordered to evict an old woman from her home finds herself the recipient of a supernatural curse, which turns her life into a living hell. Desperate, she turns to a seer to try and save her soul, while evil forces work to push her to a breaking point.

Viewing the trailer, I was so excited, as the plot looks fantastic and timely, and there appears to be some great thrills in store. View the trailer here:

My only hesitation is that the film received an MPAA rating of PG-13.  Now, this is a great rating for movies that are looking for broad appeal, but can sometimes be the kiss of death for horror films.  Will it be edgy enough for hard core fans?  Will the scares be watered down so as not to offend?  Should the title really read “Drag Me to Heck”?

All of this remains to be seen, but I will certainly check it out.  It appears to have a great paranormal story line, and as long as the plot is entertaining, we should be able to overcome any limitations that may arise from a PG-13 rating.

Drag Me to Hell stars Alison Lohman and Justin Long, and is set release in the US on May 29, 2009.

I saw the trailer in the theater when I watched The Haunting in Connecticut. Somehow the trailer made me think that the movie wasn’t scary but entertaining like Army of Darkness. That’s Evil Dead III, isn’t it?

As a rule of thumb a PG-13 IS the kiss of death for horror movies in the eyes of horrorphiles, with few exceptions.
I mush prefer Raimi’s orignial Evil Dead than his splatstick efforts. I hope one day he decides to go back to the jugular and make a dark’n'nasty lil horror movie.

So that’s what Raimi’s been up to in between Spider-Man movies. After the last effort he needed a break. Getting back to his roots might do him some good.
Looks pretty freaky. Though, yeah, the PG thing is a bit of a worry. Is he aiming at the Twilight crowd?

Hey Carl, I got a little of that vibe too, actually. We’ll see how it pans out.

      Bryn,

I know I was really a bit bummed by that rating, because the trailer makes it look like it might actually be scary! I hope so. I’m in need of a good scare!

      Hi Pembry!

I thought of the Twilight thing right off as well. Especially with the young stars involved.

I’m not ready to write this one off just yet, folks. We shall see soon enough!

I’m taking my mum to this for her birthday on the weekend. She loves horror flicks. Now you know why I’m weird. I’ll let you know what I think.
