Online Shoppers Unknowingly Sold Their Immortal Souls (Serious!)

I’m guilty of it.. and likely so are you. I can often be heard casually offering up my soul for any number of trivial things that could bring me instant gratification. For example, “I would sell my soul for a cheeseburger right now.” (I think I just uttered those words last evening.)
On April 1st… 7,500 online shoppers sold their immortal souls for a video game. Literally! A UK retailer, GameStation… added the following clause to its web site’s Terms and Conditions
“By placing an order via this Web site on the first day of the fourth month of the year 2010 Anno Domini, you agree to grant Us a non transferable option to claim, for now and for ever more, your immortal soul. Should We wish to exercise this option, you agree to surrender your immortal soul, and any claim you may have on it, within 5 (five) working days of receiving written notification from gamestation.co.uk or one of its duly authorised minions.”
This “immortal soul clause” was intended to be an April Fool’s Joke, and further goes on to say, “we reserve the right to serve such notice in 6 (six) foot high letters of fire, however we can accept no liability for any loss or damage caused by such an act. If you a) do not believe you have an immortal soul, b) have already given it to another party, or c) do not wish to grant Us such a license, please click the link below to nullify this sub-clause and proceed with your transaction.”
In addition to being brilliant marketing (I’d never heard of them before), GameStation also proves a valuable point. No one reads the Terms and Conditions for online sales or memberships anymore. We just sort of skim through them and assume they all say about the same thing. Perhaps this was a gentle lesson learned.
Well, maybe not so gentle for those 7,500 people who nervously wait for the six foot letters of fire to appear at their doorstep any day now… demanding that they release their so frivolously squandered souls to the rightful owner… gamestation.co.uk.
**GameStation has stated that they intend to email customers to inform them that any claim the company has on their soul has been nullified. Party Poopers!
