The World Teacher: Who is this Maitreya?

Most religions have a redemptive figure…a man or spirit destined to appear on Earth at a time undisclosed, to save us from this wicked place or to teach us harmony that we’ve been unsuccessful in achieving on our own. For Christians, Christ will return to smite the wicked. In Islam, it is the Imam Mahdi. For the Jewish there is an impending Messiah, in Hinduism there is the Kalki avatar of Vishnu, and for Buddhists, it is Maitreya.
But what if someone claimed that there is a man, walking the Earth today, who is all of these figures in one, sent to bring peace and enlightenment to the world? What if he claimed that this man was called Maitreya, The World Teacher, and that he is currently living in the Asian community in London, in the Bangladeshi Brick Lane area?
Benjamin Creme, a Scottish born artist and author, claims that the above questions are true. Maitreya is here, and he will soon make his existence known to the world in the form of signs and wonders, and then in the flesh.
Throughout his life as an artist, Creme became fascinated with the works of Helena Blavatsky and the Theosophical Society, as well as Madame Blavatsky’s successor, Alice A. Bailey. The Theosophical Society told of a group of Masters who held the answers to all of life’s great mysteries; perfected individuals who are the custodians of the Divine Plan for this planet. In 1959, Creme claims that he was visited by one of these Masters, and was told that the Maitreya would return to Earth in 20 years time. He was also told that he would have a role to play in the events surrounding the Maitreya unveiling.
In 1972, he began his work as a student of the Masters, preparing himself to become the spokesperson for this revelation. According to his Biography: Creme’s constant contact with a Master of Wisdom gives him access to up-to-date information on Maitreya’s emergence, plus the total conviction needed to present this story.
Under the banner of an organization called Share International, Mr. Creme publishes books and manages a web site, proclaiming this World Teacher, spreading his message, and telling people to get ready for his appearance. They do not attach him to any one religion. If fact, they claim that this Maitreya is simply here to bring peace and understanding to the world, and that he will come for those of all faiths, or no faith at all.
Share International Claims that this is the miraculous manifestation of Maitreya's Hand print. According to the organization, "We have a photograph of the ‘hand’ of Maitreya. Get a copy of that ‘hand’ and invoke His help. Look at the hand and ask Him through the hand. Ask Maitreya whatever it is you need help for. That is all you need to do if you want help."
In an interview with the New York Times, Creme is quoted as saying that Maitreya left his abode in the Himalaya Mountains in a “self-created” human body to travel to London on July 19, 1977, where he has since lived in the South Asian immigrant community, preparing for a “Day of Declaration,” in which he will reveal himself via global television and teach the building of a new civilization for the benefit of all.

Maitreya has supposedly already made a number of impromptu personal appearances around the globe. The most cited case was in Kenya, where he apparently materialized out of thin air at a Christian revival service. He spoke to the crowd and performed miraculous healings, and then vanished as mysteriously as he had appeared.

“In the very near future, people everywhere will have the opportunity to witness an extraordinary and significant sign, the like of which has been manifested only once before, at the birth of Jesus. Then, according to Christian teaching, a star appeared in the heavens and led three wise men from the East to the birthplace of Jesus. Believers in this World Teacher say that we will know when the time is near, because a bright and brilliant star will appear in the sky. It is a phenomenon they say has only happened once before…when the star of Bethlehem led the three Wise Men to the manger where Jesus was born. This new star will herald the emergence of the Maitreya from behind the scenes to a more open existence.
Maitreya has told his followers, through the prophetic words of Benjamin Creme, that soon we will all see him appear on a world wide broadcast, where his face will fill the homes of every one on the planet. He will speak of justice and brotherhood, and communicate with people on a telepathic level. At this time, he will not announce himself as Maitreya, but some may recognize him. After more signs and miracles, eventually Maitreya will make his existence known to everyone, and a new age of harmony and fellowship will begin. Actually, some claim to have already seen this star, and Maitreya apparently has confirmed these sightings as genuine. From the Share International web site:
On 12 December 2008 Share International distributed a news release announcing that in the very near future a large, bright star would appear in the sky visible throughout the world, night and day, heralding the imminent appearance of Maitreya in His first interview on a major US television programme. Since early January 2009 sightings of the star have been reported all over the world and hundreds of sightings have been sent to Share International. We include a selection of the latest reports from the media, Share International readers, and sightings from YouTube. All are genuine sightings confirmed by Benjamin Creme’s Master to be the ‘star’.
So, if the star has already appeared, is it now time to expect Maitreya to reveal his identity? How many more signs and miracles will there be before this Worldwide TV broadcast? It seems that Share International and Benjamin Creme attribute all supernatural and strange phenomena to the Maitreya as one of his many signs. All Creme will say, and all he has been saying for years, is that Maitreya is coming “soon”.
Anti-Christ?
Of course, where there are prophets, there is fire. And anyone claiming to be The Christ, or the Buddha, or the Imam Mahdi, is a false prophet, according to practitioners. The most vocal have been Christians, who claim that this Maitreya fits the classic definition of the Biblical Anti-Christ. Many web sites have been springing up over the years proclaiming that Maitreya IS the Anti-Christ, and they explain in great detail how this is so. One such site is Look Up Fellowship. Maitreya is to appear at a time when catastrophic events are overtaking the earth.

Some have taken this a step further, and claimed that the President of the United States, Barack Obama, is the Maitreya/Anti-Christ. If you’re anything like me, you probably saw that coming a mile away.
I find endless fascination in these types of claims. History has shown that most people who claim to have a direct pipeline to the second coming end up fizzling out, or going up in flames. Creme and his “Ascended Masters” have been around for 30 years, and his followers are still anxiously awaiting this new age of understanding. I will not be holding my breath, but after 30 years, they likely aren’t holding theirs either.
Nice to see a sane, accurate and neutral article on the reappearance of the Christ. I’m one of those folks who have watched this movement for over 20 years, and have had enough personal experiences to be convinced there is something to Creme’s information.
Timing has always been difficult, since Creme says that humanity has free will which may not be infringed, must want what Maitreya teaches, that we are SUBJECTIVELY one, and that sharing Earth’s resources is the only way to avoid eventually self destruction. Pretty stiff requirements for a world still mired in competition for the most money.
Hey Liz! Thanks for popping in and sharing your perspective. I do try to keep these types of posts as neutral as possible, as I don’t know the answers, and I like to allow people to make determinations for themselves on what to believe.
Admittedly, it is difficult for me NOT to occasionally inject a smidge of my own opinion here and there, but I appreciate your acknowledgment of my attempt at neutrality.
I will say that if we are to wait for the world as a whole to desire peace and harmony before we are to see the emergence of Maitreya, we’ll likely be waiting another 30 years, if not forever. Perhaps I’m too pessimistic.
Although I too have moments of pessimism,
I think that the severe instability brought about by the financial collapse has shown that our institutions are not nearly as stable and benign as they should be. Creme speaks of the breakdown of our structures, social/economic/political/religious/scientific etc. And you gotta wonder about the disease of commercialism. I mean is there anything that isn’t for sale? Even America herself?
If my memory serves me correctly, I believe that on the “Day of Declaration” is when Maitreya will first make his name known.
Before then his appearances on TV and media will not reveal his name or status.
This is to ensure that people embrace the message instead of the messenger.
Liz, you’re right. It seems that everything does have a price, and it’s difficult not to get discouraged. I suppose there is logic in the concept that things this corrupt need to break completely before a new system can be built.
Azomite, that’s correct. Or at least, that’s my understanding as well. Admittedly, the waters do get a little murky when trying to figure the message out. Some people like Liz have been studying Maitreya for 20 years. I just heard about this maybe three or four years ago

It’s funny…Christ didn’t really set out to create a new religion either…human nature just sort of made it happen.
However, this whole thing does have the seemings of an “anti-christ” figure as Christians have been taught throughout the years.

I’ve always thought that organized religion has corrupted the true message that Jesus was attempting to deliver.

I like this article and comments- open minded at least to the POSSIBILITY of the authenticity of Mr Creme’s information. I also like the realisation expressed by one or two- of the obvious hopelessness of our current financial/economic & political structures and that perhaps they NEED to collapse so that sane alternatives can be explored and implemented.
Humanity has a broken heart because relationship with the Earth, relationship with nature and animals, and relationship with itself have all been corrupted by greed. We shouldn’t fear Maitreya. Let’s listen, and decide whether it is wisdom or not. Does it really matter who guides us back on the right track, as long as it is the right track.

I doubt that the return of the spiritual leader archetype would involve forced conscription to a religious system… that sounds more like the fanaticism that made the Obama administrations passing of the GIVE act possible. Has anyone read that? All volunteers are totally banned from any political, religious, social (or really) any movement or affiliation that goes against the “corperation”.
The Obama movement in the United States is simply terrifying. Political decisions should not be based on emotion and the cult of personality, even less on the total chorus of mainstream media madness that occurred during the election… even less should support continue in the face of the lies, the duplicity, the gutting of the economy, the trillions stolen, the rabit fanaticism, the calls for world peace by dissarmament… (didn’t I hear something about the antichrist disarming the world first?). Objective reports like this are rather rare these days, so I appreciate the way this was laid out.
I could list a whole bunch of facts which help convince me of the reality of this teacher – like the thousands of miracles over the years, or the amazingly accurate forecasts Maitreya gave (from 1988 – 1993) regarding major world events. However, to be honest, what makes it most real is Maitreya’s teachings on the “laws of life”, and what he’s about.
I hope readers do their own research and think for themselves. Probably better to not believe or deny anything outright. Just observe. It sounds easy enough, but it’s not so commonly practiced, apparently.
Anyone who says “I know everything and this is false or true, you should follow my ideology” is probably lost themselves, and/or speaking out of fear. Maitreya certainly speaks a lot about this subject.
It has been said, “know the tree by its fruit”.
In my opinion, this entire Maitreya personality has been created by the illuminati/luciferian/occultists that control the financial networks/commerce on the planet. This systemic network is being designed to fail on purpose to usher in complete chaos and enslave man to a new communistic/maitreyic world order. I have something to say about this: There will be many false claims. The true Messiah will not perform miracles and wonders for the time of miracles and wonders has passed (this is not a circus act). You have had over 2000 years to get it right. Not only will there be false claims but there will be false claims to make the false claims false in order to set up the real anti-Christ which is still a false claim but you won’t Know it. The real avatar of Jesus the Lion of Judah and Prince of Israel is a Saxon born of a prince man and a princess woman, human, and has no affiliation with masons. His justice is swift. He lived a normal humble life like every one else. No one will believe him anyway. So bring it on Maitreya and lets see how it plays out. Make your move.

I have tried to research the miracles but there are no objective reports about them. Only Share International reports, which are biased frankly. I really do hope it is true. I remain skeptical and agnositc about it. No one talks about sharing. I find that at least special to the whole thing.

There is more than just one person claiming to be Maitreya, or the return of Christ, or the Prophet of God, etc. Christ said that there would be many false prophets who would come in his name – but he also said that he would return. So the question is, could any of these claimants be the True One? Do any of them fulfill prophecies in Scripture, prophecies given by Christ and all other world religions, prophets, and cultures, of a Prophet to come? Not signs and wonders, which we have been warned against, but fulfillment of Prophecies, bringing of a great Message that will accelerate the progress of humanity, etc. It is the duty of each individual to study, search for the truth, pray for guidance, and see if it is indeed the end times, and we should expect a True Prophet, and who that Prophet might be.
I submit a candidate for your research: http://www.maitreya.org . Study the claims, see the Prophecies fulfilled, and decide/prove to yourselves whether this Maitreya is different than the others, and indeed IS the Prophet of God returned to earth.
